Residential architects in Gloucestershire & the Cotswolds
Thoughtful architecture, shaped by people and place
Lewis Critchley Architects is a RIBA Chartered architecture practice specialising in bespoke homes, extensions and renovations.
Based in Gloucestershire, we work across Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, the Cotswolds and throughout the UK, creating distinctive homes that respond to their owners, their setting and the way they want to live.
Founded by Lewis Critchley in 2019, the practice combines creative design with technical expertise and a clear understanding of planning and construction. We can guide a project from the earliest conversations and feasibility studies through planning, detailed design and construction.
Every project starts with listening. We take time to understand how you live, what makes the site particular and what you want the project to achieve. There is no house style or predetermined solution. Instead, each design develops from the character of the place, the needs of the client and the opportunities we discover along the way.
Our aim is to make architecture that is beautiful, useful and enduring — and to make the process of creating it clear, collaborative and enjoyable.
Architecture with a sense of place
The best homes belong to their surroundings.
Whether designing a new house in the Cotswolds, extending a Gloucestershire home or working with a sensitive rural site, we consider landscape, orientation, natural light, views and materials from the outset.
We look for opportunities within each site rather than imposing a preconceived architectural style. This often leads to simple, carefully considered ideas: bringing daylight deeper into a home, framing a particular view, creating a stronger connection with the garden or finding new value in an existing building.
The result is architecture that feels individual yet entirely at home in its setting — generous spaces, thoughtful details and materials chosen to age well.
Contemporary homes, extensions and residential architecture
Our residential work includes bespoke new-build homes, house extensions, remodelling and renovation projects, feasibility studies and residential developments.
We can support clients from the earliest ideas and assessment of a site through concept design, planning permission and technical design to tender and construction.
As a RIBA Chartered practice, our approach follows a structured architectural process while remaining flexible enough to suit the requirements of each individual project.
We work closely with planning consultants, structural engineers, landscape designers, contractors and other specialists where required, coordinating the wider team to help turn a strong architectural concept into a successfully completed building.

A collaborative approach
Good architecture starts with good communication.
We work closely with our clients throughout the design process, listening carefully to their priorities and explaining the opportunities, decisions and compromises involved as the project develops.
Our role is not simply to draw what we are asked to draw. We explore possibilities, challenge assumptions where appropriate and bring our experience and creativity to the brief. Sometimes the most successful solution is one that neither architect nor client had imagined at the beginning.
This collaborative approach allows us to create architecture that reflects both the character of its owners and the qualities of its location.
Architecture designed to endure
We are selective about the projects we undertake because we want to give each one the thought and attention it deserves.
Our ambition is to create buildings of quality and substance: architecture that works beautifully in everyday life, responds sensitively to its surroundings and continues to be valued long after construction is complete.
From the first conversation to the finished building, passion, attention to detail and a commitment to good design underpin everything we do.
